Current Happenings
At the commencement of 2007, the General Practice Advisory Council (GPAC) identified a number of priorities for progression, one of those being, identification and progression of ways in which to increase the workforce capacity of general practice, particularly throughout Queensland.
The Mater/ University of Queensland Centre for Primary Health Care Innovation was engaged by Queensland Health on behalf of GPAC to conduct a literature review and formulate a report on behalf of GPAC regarding the identification of new and innovative approaches to increasing primary health care capacity. In addition to this, the Mater Centre also undertook a rapid review of information relating to new approaches to service delivery relevant to general practice capacity, linking primary and secondary care. A range of Key Informant Interviews were conducted by the Mater Centre with the GPAC partners in order to identify current innovative models of primary care and inform the research undertaken by the Centre. The final report from the Mater Centre was cleared for distribution in June, 2008.
In identifying the priorities for progression by GPAC in 2008, recognition was given by the GPAC partners to the work undertaken by the Mater Centre, as well as to the evolving national and Queensland primary health care environment. In acknowledging the emerging policies and strategies in this area, agreement was reached to undertake the following:
- Keep a watching brief over the current and evolving Queensland and National policy and general practice environment in order to leverage off and inform emerging opportunities where applicable and appropriate.
- Undertake a scoping exercise of existing and potential roles within general practice.
- Facilitate a future focused General Practice Summit to examine the possibilities and opportunities for general practice in the future.
