Payments are made in respect of the provision of appropriate training sessions ($100 per session with a maximum of two sessions per day).
For the purposes of the PIP, teaching sessions are defined as eligible for payment if they meet the following criteria:
- sessions must be a minimum of three hours duration;
- maximum payment of two sessions per medical student per calendar day;
- the medical students must be enrolled in an Australian Medical University and the session must be part of the curriculum for the student; and
- the relevant university has asked the GP to be responsible for the student's learning experience, even if occurring outside the GP's surgery.
This payment will not cover GP registrar placements or schemes such as the John Flynn Medical Program, which are remunerated under different arrangements.
The relevant university will send participating practices a claim form for the student/s they have hosted. The practice is to verify the form then forward it to Medicare Australia.
Practices can contact Medicare Australia for information on the cut off dates for claiming payment for eligible sessions.
